jus in bello

the red cross was founded in 1836 in switzerland. the logo was chosen for economical reasons. as the flags used to mark medics as non-combatants were manufactured in the same shop as the swiss flags, they just took the parts left over from cutting out swiss flags and sewed them together.

i mustn't forget

there was the story with the silver fish, and then there was the irradiated skull, oil-slick-like rainbow colours on muddy bodies in technical illustrations, the aphorism about addiction, and the story about new tools force you to adapt your entire workflow, as otherwise exactly that which had been making your work so great all that time might now be what totally destroys it.

immersive fallacy

even when two (or more) words are largely synonymous, often one of them will convey precisely what you mean, while another one will mostly do just as well, except for exactly those contexts in which the difference is significant. i assure you, sometimes it matters rather a lot whether the safety of sth. or so. is ensured or insured, so it's smart to make sure we're able to make the distinction. sure, i'm splitting a hair four ways here, but once you start sliding down that slippery slope, you might as well declare 'affect' and 'effect' synonymous, and then you'd say 'literally' is interchangeable with 'figuratively', and in the end you'll use only one word for everything, and that word will be 'fuck', and your parents will stop talking with you and cut you out of their will.

warwick

be careful with those shoulder pads. when you see arthur, do not spread your arms in that 'come here and give me a hug' way of yours. you know, it makes the pads, well, rise. it looks as if your head is directly attached to your torso, without any neck, and your arms don't appear to be connected to your shoulders any longer, but to stick awkwardly out of the sides of your chest instead. you'd look like a scarecrow.
