there's not enough re-use of intellectual property in this world. information wants to be free, but people are too afraid of "theft", i.e. usage which is not financially compensated for. as a result, i end up writing most primitive things from scratch for my current project.
and i'm biting my ass because that particular work is not being financially compensated for at all. and i have to write stuff that surely exists on hundreds of other computers already.
this is so stupid, money can't be the only reason. i guess people want to do things from scratch. it's such a nice feeling. and they lose interest in their own work the moment it's advanced enough to suit their own needs. working just a little bit more on it to make it available and re-usable is not a nice feeling at all.

giving things away for free is not a nice feeling at all. why help others? so their genes make it into the pool and repress my own? oh no!
primeval instincts, you know... that kind of thinking is not quite up to date... folks, be a little smarter than that, please, okay?

in memoriam Don LaFontaine

in a world of alcohol and cigarettes, time has arrived for a hero to keep up the same deep, gravelly growling voice over the decades, doing dozens of voiceovers every single day. time is running out when he hurries from one job to the next in his private limosine. one man accepts the challenge. Don LaFontaine is... the movie trailer voiceover man. a killing machine; a one-man army. when there's no-one to trust, he's playing a deadly game; his vocal cords being an explosive combination.
... until now.

SunOS on your pc soon?

we were talking about megadollar's announcement that they planned to replace the whole system API with dotnet technology, thus enabling new binaries to run on every platform that supports dotnet. we had our doubts that would ever work, because in theory any other OS (like Linux) would be able to run new 'doze apps just by providing a dotnet API; which microdollar wouldn't want to happen. so he said

"arrgh; i wish someone would finally make up some kind of OS standard that ensures compatibility between all systems."
and i replied
"like posix?"
and he said
oh, right, it already exists... finished!
of course, posix only provides compatibility for people who compile their own binaries.

i wonder how fast the UltraJava chip will be. and if intel/amd could be convinced to build java cores into their cpus.

however, you can create art on a computer that doesn't understand it.

no spam please

the father of a daugther that will soon give up the spirit miserably if no marrow donor can be found, who starts a chain letter for that reason, perchance without mentioning the current date or anything that would portend seriousness, is as much an idiot as someone who fakes the whole thing. you just don't do it that way, it's absolutely not targeted. there are organizations that scout out matching donors anyway and everyone can devise sensible ways to propagandize them. chain letters don't make sense, because they never do.

deleting such spam unread doesn't give me a guilty conscience. well, for the poor little girl it's mighty bad luck that her loving dad is such a moron, mais c'est la vie, c'est la mort.
