always install nethack. they'll want to play it anyways. so if you don't, not only will they waste time playing it, they'll also waste time tracking it down, downloading it, installing it, and writing a new config file for it. yes, all this work will dissuade them – for a while. just long enough so they'll forget all those cryptic commands. eventually they will install it, only to waste even more time reading through all of the documentation again. but if you do install it, you can patch it so it sends you a notification whenever it's started. ...
